New Delhi-based interior design firm Design Doodle Studio conceptualised the interiors of a 2,800-square-foot penthouse apartment in Gurugram. Aptly known as ‘Marshmallow,’ the home is a whimsical haven housing aesthetically pleasing yet functional furnishings. The apartment is a sanctuary for adults yearning to lose themselves in the plush embrace of a giant marshmallow. In this abode, warmth intertwines seamlessly with elegance, each material and detail meticulously curated to evoke a cascade of emotions. Understated luxury finds harmony with earthy sensibilities, creating an ambience that whispers of opulence yet remains rooted in authenticity.

The abode boasts a light-filled living and dining area that opens into an outdoor space, a kitchen, a family den, a master suite and the daughter’s bedroom. The project showcases the studio’s design ethos—minimalism, seamless curves, textured elements, and a penchant for arches

“As curious designers, we dare to transcend conventional boundaries, reimagining homes as vessels of emotion and sanctuary. We weave narratives inspired by our client’s personalities and lifestyles, infusing each thread with the essence of their being. The client’s desire for a relaxing ambience with a modern luxury twist set the tone for the project. Our canvas became a tapestry of free-flowing curves bathed in marshmallow hues, choreographing a mesmerising symphony that beckons you to surrender to its comforts,” mention Vijay Kumar and Maha K, Principal Designers of Design Doodle Studio.

A Tranquil Sanctuary

From the moment guests step inside, they are welcomed by an ambience that feels both familiar and enchanting. Plush fabrics, seamless surfaces, and subtle textures beckon, inviting visitors to indulge in a sense of comfort. The journey commences in a circular entrance lobby, leading to the apartment’s two distinct zones. To the left, a private sanctuary awaits, while the right unveils an entertainment haven. The layout, initially planned for four bedrooms, was reimagined to prioritise expansive spaces for the family, resulting in three generously sized bedrooms. A decision to prioritise expansive spaces resulted in a harmonious blend of luxury and comfort, setting the stage for a luxurious living experience.

Peach Fuzz

Throughout the home, the almost edible colour palette transports guests to a world of serenity and sophistication, perfectly complementing the soft curves that grace every corner. This apartment is bathed in the Pantone colour of the year 2024—Peach Fuzz. Moreover, from the whispers of micro cement floors to the exquisite allure of bespoke Venetian terrazzo inlays, every material was chosen with care, every element meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of warmth and comfort.

“The colour palette was derived from our client’s wish for their home to be a calm retreat. They wanted their abode to be an escape from the bustling city, where they could instantly feel refreshed and rejuvenated. It is these very feelings that we sought to achieve through the marshmallow shades of our colour palette,” explain the designers. “The plush fabrics and subtle textures on the walls and floor further contribute to an almost palpable sense of comfort and cosiness, which can draw parallels with the comfort that a marshmallow dipped in a warm cup of hot chocolate brings you on a chilly winter night,” they add.

Open Layout

As the clients like to entertain a lot, the living, dining, and kitchen areas are the heart of the home. This open space boasts pastel hues, sumptuous furnishings in circular forms, fluted walls, and plenty of arches. The living, dining, kitchen and terrace effortlessly and purposefully flow into one another seamlessly, owing to the open spatial layout and the cohesion in design language, making it feel like an uninterrupted large space. The design also encourages free movement from the indoors to the outdoors, by arranging the furniture slightly away from the walls, offering a seamless transition by simply sliding open the glass doors. The designers’ focus on a unified cohesive narrative ensures that every space of the home contributes harmoniously to the overall ambience, resulting in a seamless and immersive experience for inhabitants and visitors alike.

Private Haven

The primary suite also showcases a unique blend of curved volumes where a wide arched opening segregates the bedroom zone from the rest of the suite, without having to create physical divisions or partitions. An isolated column was proving to be a hindrance in the flow of the space, so the designers decided to create a circular envelope around it and wrapped it in a custom wallpaper that helped convert what was an obstacle into a unique statement. The curved ceiling detail that wraps around the circular column was also designed to conceal the existing beam without making it obvious. The use of graphic elements at various locations helps maintain a playful balance in an otherwise calming aesthetic.

Unique Materiality

Microcement and lime plaster are predominant materials that are seen in most areas of this home as the interior designers wanted to create seamless surfaces that were uninterrupted by joints or divisions. The orchestration of these materials is strikingly augmented by the custom solid oakwood furniture with its soft cloud-like upholstered shapes and volumes wrapped in rich textured fabrics.

“Another material that features in several spaces is a custom Venetian terrazzo inlay. This came into being from a simple request from our clients, not wanting any rugs in their homes, as they were not very fond of them. So we thought, why not create a flooring inlay that would visually act like a rug without having to worry about maintenance,” conclude the interior designers. Marshmallow is a tranquil sanctuary inviting guests and residents to take a pause and daydream.

The Home of an Urban Nomad in Noida, a penthouse previously, has undergone a major renovation. To meet the family’s needs and preferences, the entire space underwent extensive civil work with a change in layout. Walls were relocated and bathrooms were repositioned. Spread over two floors, the lower level houses the social areas alongside two guest bedrooms. The primary suite, two children’s bedrooms, a study, and a lounge area occupy the upper level. The clients desired an inviting abode, which showcased their creative personalities and that was a tranquil sanctuary. Hemant and Nandita, a creative duo approached Navya Aggarwal, the principal designer of Navya And A Quarter to conceptualise an 8,500-square-foot duplex penthouse in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Old Meets New

The ‘Home of an Urban Nomad,’ houses decor pieces from the couple’s ancestral homes and travels around the world. The apartment exhibits an old meets new design narrative.

“Multiple breakfast dates, car rides, and a huge directory of images inspired this new home. The brief wasn’t a statement, but several conversations on how the clients envisioned spending time at home. During extensive brainstorming sessions with Hemant and Nandita, certain keywords consistently emerged, setting the tone for the abode. It was evident that they wanted the penthouse to reflect their individual and shared journeys. Elements from their ancestral homes were integrated into the space, with a modern twist, to represent their current lives,” mentions Navya Aggarwal, principal designer of Navya And A Quarter.

The mouldings used as wall panelling add a sophisticated touch to the space and the fluted ceiling adds depth to the overall setup. The living room opens into the dining area in an open layout, making it ideal for hosting. The dining area features a six-person dining table with a marble tabletop and an arresting contemporary chandelier

The home also boasts an emerald-green family lounge with a gallery wall of family mementoes and a comfortable sofa. “This design narrative unfolds in materials, colour tonality, and composition. The home features highlights of terrazzo, brass, mulmul, lime-wash textures, and more. In addition, the carefully crafted colour palette aligns with the clients’ association with resort wear—colours that are easy on the eyes yet fresh in their appeal. Brighter tones were chosen for the children’s areas, reflecting Gen Z aesthetics, while a darker tone was used in the lounge, where the family enjoys cosy movie nights,” adds Navya Aggarwal.

Tranquil Sanctuary

The primary bedroom is a warm and welcoming space with the same tropical vibe as the rest of the home. Its highlights include a wooden four-poster bed, ornate chandeliers, bay window seating, and a workstation with a rattan chair. The abode’s furnishings are a mix of leading Indian brands such as Gulmohar Lane, Dtale Modern, Obeetee and Oorjaa, bespoke pieces, and the clients’ family heirlooms. Most of the tropical-themed lighting fixtures are bespoke. “The old meets new narrative flows all through the house. Our journey to find the right furniture and decor pieces took us to various cities, including Jaipur, Kochi, and Moradabad. A significant highlight is the wide range of lighting fixtures sourced in materials such as cane, brass, jute, and beads, strategically placed throughout the house,” remarks the designer.

Spread across 8000 square feet Temple Town’s brand-new store in Kochi, is akin to a museum of modern Indian home furnishings. Inspired by the rich heritage and traditions of South India, Meera Pyarelal’s store is a blend of curated objects and custom-made furnishings. Temple Town offers a wide range of bespoke services, including one-off furniture to complete designing and execution for an entire home or apartment. From tropical tiger prints to bright-coloured and patterned tile selections, they have it all. Visitors are pleasantly surprised because entering this store feels like a visit to your favourite relative’s home, the one who has spent decades collecting the finest crafts, textiles, and memorabilia and turned their home into a delightful cabinet of curiosities.

This store in Temple Town is Pyarelal’s second imprint in Kerala with the first being her home studio in Thrissur. The first floor of this home studio is a small but mighty collection of porcelain plates, wooden candlesticks, stone tableware, wooden knick-knacks, and a four-poster bed. Each item in this story is filled with a story of how her team sourced the object, restored it, and found a place in the store for it. With a master’s in Literature, Pyarelal seeks out poetry in spaces around her. The craftsmanship of wooden furniture, the delicate lines of artisanal sculpture, and the curves and rounded edges of a traditional easy chair are the languages she speaks fluently. After spending a decade styling homes, she decided to create a space to house all her creativity. While she still offers her interior services, patrons are now able to access the magic of her curations through her new store in Kochi

At the inauguration of their store in Kochi, Pyarelal family and friends were present in large numbers— reflecting the spirit of community that exists with the Temple Town brand. Their event was orchestrated to mimic a grand wedding, the coming together of two unique journeys– Meera Pyralel the literature aficionado turned interior stylist, and her love for all things wonderful. The event was peppered with flowers, storytelling, and performance acts native to Kerala like Kathakali, Mayuriattam, Kalarippayattu and so many others— all an indication of the richness of Indian culture.  “The objective of the store is to preserve and promote traditional Indian designs and craftsmanship, which is slowly getting lost in the sands of time,” explains Pyarelal.

The store is akin to a cabin of curiosities with design and cultural influences from around the globe and India. Above on the left for example are leather puppets an ancient folk art in Andhra Pradesh. (Image Credits: Temple Town)

On the lower floor is a stunning entryway cabinet with oriental designs of dragons in rich shades of greens and reds– a wonderful example of Temple Town’s eye for traditional aesthetics. In a sea of European luxury brands, Temple Town holds its own by presenting a line of luxury furnishings that are homegrown. While many of Pyarelal’s objects and selections are sourced globally, the underlying modern Indian theme is predominant. Both her studio and the grand store in Kochi have a selection of wooden cabinets with delicate inlay work. These cabinets are a stunning mix of wood and weaves— reflecting a coastal aesthetic. This isn’t to imply that Pyarelal’s furniture pieces are typically of Indian origin, they are a blend of both Western and Eastern design histories. “Colonial furniture is the best creative collaboration between the East and the West and hence the only way to enjoy the best of both worlds,” she explains, “It is all about creating an heirloom which you can pass on to the next generations.”

Many of the seating options for instance had grandiose of the Art-Deco era and the tonality of the global south— primary colours, bold hues of reds, greens, and blue. Nestled amidst the gems in Temple Town Kochi is a framed set of leather hand puppets from the state of Andhra Pradesh on the top floor. The studio and store are chockful of pieces that can become heirlooms because in many ways they already have acquired a story and life of their own that adds to the charm of owning a piece of furniture from Temple Town.

Evocative Of A French Conservatory

The design brief for ‘An Evening in Everland’ was simple—to craft a florally opulent glass house decorated with visually arresting organic flowers. The theme was ‘World meets Indian heritage.’ This was translated into a regal glass house that was evocative of a French conservatory. As guests strolled through the driveway, nature’s beauty greeted them via a majestic entrance, well-manicured gardens, water features, and tapestries of massive elephants and giraffes, leading to a captivating glasshouse adorned with beautiful florals. Grandiose blue delphinium urns became eye-catching elements that served as an extension to the ‘larger than life’ theme starting from the grand entrance.

Cosy Interiors

Inside the glasshouse, guests were welcomed by an opulent living room that meets an inviting courtyard vibe. It gave the impression of being transported to a sumptuous home in the French countryside. Installations of pastel-hued roses and foliage descending from the ceilings greeted guests as they walked into an expansive space evocative of a well-appointed mansion. The floral decor of the party embodied the grandeur and magnificence synonymous with the Ambani family. Family portraits, quaint fireplaces, comfortable seating, and charming bookshelves decorated the corners and walls, crafting intimate spaces for unforgettable connections.

The floral decorations were accompanied by thoughtfully curated decor pieces to craft an aesthetically pleasing backdrop for the festivities. “The floral decor instructions were precise—rich, vintage, with a play of colours, including touches of pink shades, lilacs, orange, and yellows. The central imperial table stole the show– a 100-foot-long grazing table adorned with massive floral urns reaching the ceiling. Vintage Venetian vases, cantaloupe flowers, elegant props, candles, delectable food, and a show-stopping three-tier grand cake transported everyone to another era,” adds Anuja Joshi.

Grandiose Yet Welcoming

A central water fountain was the focal point for animated conversations. The decor featured India-inspired furnishings and floral arrangements comprising flowers and foliage from Interflora India. “The whole idea behind the event was to create a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere, reminiscent of Indian culture. Even amidst grandeur, small perfume bottles and knick-knacks adorned the space, infusing a warm and inviting vibe. The inspiration of the glass house, embodying ‘world meets Indian heritage,’ resonated throughout the event, creating an enchanting experience that celebrated both global elegance and traditional Indian charm. The setup, from organic flowers to over-the-top structures created a symphony of drama and free-flowing floral grandeur that transcended the ordinary,” concludes Anuja Joshi.
